How to Make Backlit Storytelling Image With A Phone/camera!

Updated: May 18, 2020

Backlit is the type of images in which the subject is lead from behind and very little or no light compared to the background sources provided from the front.

It is one of the coolest styles of photos. Every image has its own charisma-portraits, landscape, selfies, etcetera but backlit images have its own Enigma.

Today I am telling you how to shoot awesome background images and why this is the best. This is best because this technique needs nothing. You can do it even with the cheapest of smartphones.

So finally, before I start, let me tell you a bit about the positive points of backlit photography-

the best one is you can apply this in any conditions. You don't need a colourful subject, you don't need a super-class dress, you don't need any Ray-Ban sunglasses, but all you need is a big or bright light source.

Did you know that backlight selfie is one of the most physical classes of all?

Ok now let us start the process and before that, you must know the requirements which are very minimal:-

Requirements

  • Smartphone camera

  • A big light source or strong light source

  • Tripod or a hard surface (for special cases)

  • Your subject/object!

Make note: All I am saying here is with respect to the image shown. This will make sure you understand the steps nicely and can effectively apply on your own images.

Step 1- place /position your subject at a unique place (here I'm using a notebook on a table)

Step 2- Fixe a strong light source behind it.

OR reposition the subject in front of a big window or door (here I am using a small spare ceiling lamp.)

Step 3- It's better if you can place your phone on camera on a hard surface. Basically, with phones it can be done handle (here I am using a tripod).

Step 4- set your camera settings.

For DSLR:-

  1. Adjust the settings such that you have a good depth of field, that is higher f/stop number. (I'm using f/8)

  2. Try to lower the ISO as much as you can (because in the dark shadows grains appear too much.) (I'm using ISO-100)

  3. Adjust your shutter speed according to the subject or light until your light meter shows the 'correct' symbol or 'correct' marking.( In my case, its at shutter speed- 1/125)

For Phones:-

  1. Try to use manual mode if your phone supports it.

  2. Make sure to keep your ISO on low.

  3. Increase aperture to a bit of higher values.

  4. You can also use auto-exposure (exclusive smartphone feature that automatically adjusts the light according to the specific region where you touch in the photo).

CRUCIAL STEP:- Don't forget to edit your photos!

So this was all about Backlit photo-taking processes. If you face any problem, feel free to comment down below. I'll come up with a dedicated solution for you!
